HDMI Compliance Certification and cable length

Is there a maximum cable length for HDMI Compliance Certification?

The question below was originally submitted to us by by Mr K, (Ottawa, Canada)

Does the size of cable make a difference on high definition?

Here is the result of the research we did:

There is no maximum cable length specified, however the longer the run, better quality cable is required.

10 meter lengths have been used and tested without the need of a "repeater" with no problems.

According to the hdmi.org website There are two types of cables available:

Standard (also known as category 1) HDMI cables can handle speeds of 75Mhz up to 2.25Gbps (equivalent of a 720p/1080i signal). The latest standard is 1.4

High Speed (also known as category 2) HDMI cables can handle speeds of 340Mhz up to 10.2Gbps, (highest bandwidth currently available over HDMI cables). It successfully handles 1080p signals.

Buying Tip
As with anything you get what you pay for, however you can pay too much for a HDMI cable. So retail outlets try an persuade you to buy a $150 cable (standard length) - now that is ridiculous price! Don't be had!

In a recent test there was found to be NO actual difference between a $30 and a $150 cable - only a lighter pocket book. Find out about this

Note
There are somel cable manufacturers that do not indicate if their cables have either certification or if they are compliant to any particular standard. Rather than name names here, check this out first - stay clear of these cables
