What is happening in Canada?

The question below was originally submitted to us by by Ron, (Ottawa, Canada)

Is a HDTV already capable of the new digital programming that is coming soon?

Here is the result of the research we did:

First, We must not confuse "Digital" with "High Definition" (HD) - both are digital, one is of a "standard format" and the other is "high definition format".

The information below relates to those who receive their TV "over-the-air" (by aerial/antenna):

Originally TVs were produced with Analog(ue) receivers. Then Digital came along and they were fitted with Analog and Digital receivers. CRT was replaced with LCD. At the time of writing (2011) in Canada there is no obligation for TVs to be fitted with a digital tuner or even to indicate that a analogue-only tuner is fitted.

USA
In the USA the digital switchover only affected those who only had Analogue receivers - they had to make the change to Digital to continue to receive transmissions.

CANADA
As we understand, it is a different matter in Canada, as not only the above applies, but also you have switch television formats - to ATSC. Your Digital Switchover deadline has been set to August 31, 2011
